About Mapes & Sprowl

About Us

Mapes and Sprowl Steel was founded as an East Coast general line service center during the early 1920’s. The company moved to Chicago in 1927 to support growing electrical steel use in the radio market. Mapes & Sprowl Steel entered the enameling steel market in the 1950’s to diversify their product portfolio. The 1980’s brought significant growth to the company and the facility moved from the North-West side of Chicago to the current location in Elk Grove Village, IL. In 2004, Mapes & Sprowl Steel introduced Agion® Antimicrobial Treated Steel to the North American market. This advanced product allowed for the introduction of cost-effective solutions for end uses requiring antimicrobial properties. In 2007, Mapes & Sprowl Steel purchased Cortran, Inc, expanding into the production of wound electrical steel cores. This strategic acquisition has allowed the company to vertically integrate and provided cost efficient solution to our customers.

Our experience and knowledge in these markets have allowed us to deliver our customers specific materials needed for a variety of industries.
